Purpose
To rejuvenate the natural value of the arid farmland, the soul of the rural economy and the heart of social relationships.
N’Rougas is a family farm in the heart of Bushmanland, where farming, heritage, community and regeneration are deeply connected.
Just south of the Orange River, N’Rougas sits within a vast, arid landscape where sheep roam the veld and indigenous plants have adapted to survive — and flourish — in demanding conditions.
Today, N’Rougas is on a journey of renewal: caring for the natural value of the land while building a farm that can remain healthy, productive and meaningful for generations to come.
Fourth- and fifth-generation landowners work in partnership with a local family whose connection to this land spans three generations.
The vision reaches beyond producing food. It is about restoring the soil, strengthening rural relationships and creating a farm where people and nature can thrive alongside one another.
To rejuvenate the natural value of the arid farmland, the soul of the rural economy and the heart of social relationships.
To produce lamb using holistic management practices that rejuvenate the veld while growing indigenous foods in partnership with local knowledge holders.
Healthy land that supports long-term farming together with a community connected to nature, heritage and meaningful economic opportunity.
This landscape is not merely where N’Rougas operates. It is part of the identity of the farm — and something worth protecting.
N’Rougas uses carefully planned grazing patterns designed to echo the movement of wildlife that historically crossed this landscape.
As the flock moves together, hoof action works manure and dead plant material back into the soil. Planned recovery periods then give plants time to rest, helping improve ground cover, soil health and biodiversity.
Sheep are shepherded during the day and kraaled at night, reducing conflict while allowing jackals and caracals to continue their important roles within the local ecosystem.
Flocks are actively managed rather than simply left behind permanent barriers.
Grazed plants are given planned time to recover before animals return.
Farming practices are designed to make room for native predators and wildlife.
Restoring native flora and fauna is part of the wider goal for the land.
Regeneration is about more than sheep and grass. Indigenous plants, insects, reptiles, birds and predators are all part of the living system N’Rougas is working to restore.
Even electric perimeter fencing has been removed in areas where it posed a risk to tortoises.
