We had great excitement on the farm yesterday. The big day dawned – we released our very beautiful, big and strong ‘Veld’ Master rams into the same camp as the ewes. It was a memorable experience. As we arrived and opened the trailer to let the rams into the camp we were blown away – with wind and a sudden cloud burst of pelting rain. Us being farmers in the Northern Cape, were delighted by the change in weather. We all stood in the rain – soaked and jubilant. The beautiful rams huddled in a group -they are so used to being all on their own. They did not venture very close to the ewes. They will have to become accustomed to company – and then in about 5 months time – our new lambing season starts.
Just so that you know – Julian estimated the locusts had eaten up to about 65% of our grazing. Since they left we have had three bouts of rain (not much – but every drop counts!) And the recovery in the veld is nothing short of miraculous. The green grass has sprung up all around us and grazing is once more abundant. This puts huge relief on us as the winter months look more promising now!
